LCD (Liquid Crystal Display) TVs work by manipulating the passage of light from a big uniform source through the crystals. When an LCD TV “breaks” there are often only issues with the delicate crystal layer, while the LEDs providing the actual source of light (the backlight) rarely have any problems.
Photoshoot
The softbox was used in a photoshoot to test its capabilities. Due to the refresh rate of the panel a gradient effect can be achieved when using a very fast shutter speed.
Build Process
This 82-inch TV was salvaged from a dumpster. It was deconstructed to remove the crystal layer and all other unnecessary parts (speakers, LCD drivers, …). The last step was to rewire the electronics to only power the backlight.
